Dental work in Korea for foreign patients

Implants, veneers and orthodontics draw a growing share of medical tourists to Korea. What is realistic to finish in one trip, and what is not.

What fits in a single trip

Cleaning, whitening, fillings, crowns and veneers can usually be completed within one to two weeks. Dental implants generally cannot: the implant is placed, then the bone needs months to integrate before the final crown goes on. Plan implants as two trips, or as one trip plus a finishing appointment at home arranged in advance.

Veneers deserve a slower decision

Veneers are irreversible. Enamel is removed and cannot be put back, and the restoration will need replacing over your lifetime. Korea does excellent cosmetic dentistry, and the speed and price on offer are exactly why this decision gets made too quickly on holiday. If you would not have said yes at home, do not say yes because it is convenient here.

Check the qualification, not the storefront

Look for a licensed dental clinic and, for surgical work such as implants, a dentist with the relevant specialist training. As with cosmetic surgery, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service records confirm a facility is a registered medical institution. A beautiful clinic interior tells you about the interior.

Ask about materials by name

Implant systems and ceramic materials vary widely in price and in how easily they can be serviced elsewhere. Ask for the brand and model in writing. If a component fails in five years, your dentist at home needs to know exactly what is in your mouth to fix it, and generic descriptions will not be enough.

Get the records and the imaging

Leave with your X-rays or CT imaging, the treatment record, and the materials list. Ask for them in a format you can hand to another dentist. This is the single most useful thing you can do to make follow-up care at home straightforward.

Timing around flights

Avoid flying immediately after an extraction or implant placement where possible, and ask your dentist how long to leave. Pressure changes are uncomfortable on a fresh surgical site, and a swollen face on a long-haul flight is a poor end to the trip.

Frequently asked

Can I get dental implants in Korea in one trip?
Usually not. The implant is placed and then bone needs months to integrate before the final crown is fitted. Plan two trips, or arrange the finishing appointment with a dentist at home before you travel.
Are veneers in Korea a good idea for tourists?
Korea does excellent cosmetic dentistry, but veneers are irreversible because enamel is permanently removed. Convenience and price are not reasons to decide faster than you would at home.
What records should I get from a Korean dental clinic?
Your imaging, the treatment record, and the exact brand and model of any implant system or ceramic used. A dentist at home cannot service unknown components.
